Ever so quietly, Apple has just discontinued selling the fourth-generation iPod touch from its online store. Instead, it is now selling a new version of the current generation of its popular portable media player.
The new version is a fifth-generation iPod touch that comes with just 16GB of onboard storage. Of course, this is half of what the previous lowest-capacity fifth-generation iPod touch holds.
More notably, the new device model comes without an iSight rear camera, which is found on both the 32GB and 64GB models.
This hardware omission, coupled with the reduced storage capacity, makes the new model a less expensive option. At just $229, it’s cheaper than its 32GB and 64GB counterparts by $70 and $170, respectively.
The new 16GB fifth-generation iPod touch also comes in just one color combination, black and silver. Furthermore, it’s shipped sans a lanyard or loop attachment.
Despite those limitations, the new model is pretty much similar to the higher-capacity and higher-price models. Like those, it has a 4-inch Retina display, a dual-core A5 chip, and Lightning connectivity.
The new 16GB fifth-generation iPod touch is now available to order from the Apple online store. For U.S. customers, it’s available to ship within 24 hours and available for pickup at an Apple Retail Store starting tomorrow, May 31.
The fifth-generation iPod touch was released by Apple in October last year as a significant improvement on the fourth-generation model. Until just a few moments ago, the previous generation had been available for $199 for the 16GB version and $249 for the 32GB version.
